BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB

My favourite film is "Buena Vista Social Club". I liked this film so much that I couldn't stop myself from seeing it several times.

This film is a documentary film made in Cuba at the end of the 20th century, about a music band. The band used to sing music for dancing clubs. Its music was forbidden to sing right after the revolution so all the band's members were spread everywhere. The band's members gathered many years after the Cuban Revolution.
Most of the film is based on interviews with the band's members and performances. They were all very old and suffering because they were unemployed. The gathering of the band gave them a new vitality which made them all happy and proud. They visited a lot of places performing music, got prizes and sold many disks. Their joy was rising and it was infecting the spectators.

Above all, the film concludes a lot of music – groovy Cuban music. If you have the opportunity to watch this film, you will enjoy it very much

  1. Hi Yehudit,
I have just read your blog about your favorite film.
My husband went on a trip to Cuba and he felt like he came back in time. The cars in the streets, the buildings and even the clothes were from the 50's. Since then I have wanted to see it myself.
I speak spanish so I would be able to understand the songs.
Thank you for the recommendation' I am sure I will enjoy it!

    1. Hi Renana,
I envy you your knowledge of Spanish and your ability to understand the Cuban lyrics.
I hope you make it to Cuba and in the meantime you enjoy its music.
I think that part of the beauty of Cuba lies in its authenticity and its people’s simple way of life.
I’m sure you can find all of these in the movie recommended by Yehudit.
      Enjoy !

    2. Hi Renana;
That's right many things in Cuba, especially cars, are very old because there was a (North) American embargo so the Cubans could not get many essential and important products. The North American "punished" the Cuban about their revolution and communist regime.

  2. Yehudit hi,
I have read your review of the movie “Buena Vista Social Club” and it sounds real familiar to me. I think I have seen the movie a long time ago, it especially rang a bell when you described the band’s hardships over time and their revival as a band around the making of the movie. You absolutely made me wish to watch the movie once again!
And to listen to the amazing sound of the Cuban music.
By the way , another wonderful movie about Cuba is “Pele” which depicts the Cuban traditional way of life as opposed to the western/ modern one as experienced through football. You just gave me an idea for a post.. thank you.

  4. Hi Yehudit!
I have read your review and reccomendation about the movie -“Buena Vista Social Club” and the first thing I felt is - curiosity!I'm not a big fan of documentary films, but it's sounds so interesting to see the uniqe places and to hear the voices from a place like Cuba.
In fact, when I was a teenager, I had a band calls - 'Cincopa'and I used to be the singer...so prbably, for me, it might be more than just a nice watching of a movie about a Cuban band!
    Thank You,
    Naama
